Plot summary
In the late 1960s and 1970s, José Hernández is a boy whose family travels from Michoacán to California as migrant workers, picking grapes. His parents want to buy a house back home once they have saved enough. José attends school and works in the fields with his family. His teacher, Ms. Young, sees his potential and comes to the family's home, concerned that the moves are disrupting his studies. After his father receives only part of the wages he is owed, the family settles in California for good.
