Plot summary
Folk music producer Irving Steinbloom has died, and his son Jonathan decides to stage a memorial concert at The Town Hall in New York, televised live, featuring three of the acts his father guided to stardom. The Folksmen, Mark Shubb, Alan Barrows and Jerry Palter, have not appeared together in decades. The New Main Street Singers, formed by George Menschell, who is the original group's only surviving member, include Terry and Laurie Bohner and Sissy Knox. Mitch Cohen and Mickey Crabbe made seven albums as Mitch & Mickey before a break-up ended their partnership. All three acts agree to reunite, and each rehearses and sits for interviews about the years since its heyday.

- The Folksmen, played by Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, first appeared on a Saturday Night Live episode broadcast on November 3, 1984, with McKean hosting and Guest and Shearer in the repertory cast. McKean said they did them "in lieu of another 'Tap' piece".
- At the 76th Academy Awards, Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara performed "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" in character. The title song "A Mighty Wind" won Guest, Levy and McKean the Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media award at the 46th Grammy Awards.
- The song "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" was composed for the film by McKean and his wife Annette O'Toole, and it earned the pair a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
- The fictional folk producer Irving Steinbloom is widely acknowledged to have been inspired by the real folk music producer Harold Leventhal, whom the film references through that character.
- Following the release of the film the cast performed a show in character at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, then took a seven-city U.S. tour in the fall of 2003 to promote the DVD.
- On the DVD commentary Guest and Levy explain a scene cut from the film: Menschell cannot actually play the guitar, and first held one only to cover a stain on his shirt front before a performance, then kept doing it ever after.
