Plot summary

Halvard Solness has won a measure of distinction and a local reputation as an architect in a small Norwegian town, where he lives with his wife, Aline. He has spent a lifetime bullying the people around him and wants to make peace. His friend Doctor Herdal comes to call, and a second visitor arrives: Hilde Wangel, twenty-two, from out of town, whom the doctor recognizes from a recent trip. Once the doctor has gone, Hilde tells Solness they are not strangers. They met ten years earlier in her home, when she was twelve; she says he made advances to her and promised her castles in the sky. He denies it. She persuades him that she can help with his household duties, and he takes her into his home.
