Kesha

Biography

Kesha is an American singer, rapper and songwriter who was born in Los Angeles, where her mother, a songwriter, encouraged her to sing and taught her to write songs. She recorded demos as a teenager, sang background vocals and co-wrote for other acts, and gained wider notice through an uncredited appearance on Flo Rida's 2009 single Right Round. After signing with RCA Records she broke through with Tik Tok and the album Animal (2010), which with Rainbow (2017) gave her two number-one albums on the Billboard 200, while Warrior (2012) and High Road (2020) reached the top ten. Ten of her singles have made the Hot 100 top ten, three of them number one, and Rainbow brought her first Grammy nominations, for best pop vocal album and for Praying. In 2010 MTV Europe named her its best new act, and her later albums include Gag Order (2023) and the independent Period (2025).

Did you know?!

  1. Big break

In early 2009, Kesha was featured on Flo Rida's chart-topping single "Right Round," gaining her mainstream exposure. The pairing came about by chance when she entered a recording session and Flo Rida wanted a female voice.

  2. A role that slipped away

Kesha went uncredited for her part on the United States version of Flo Rida's "Right Round" and was not paid for it. She turned down the video, telling Esquire she wanted to build her own name on her own terms.

  3. Early training

Max Martin persuaded Kesha to go back to Los Angeles for a music career, so at 17 she left school. She later earned her General Educational Development (GED).

  4. About the name

While she was struggling to get by, Kesha started writing her name as 'Ke$ha'. She said the dollar sign was meant as an ironic gesture.

  5. Behind the camera

Kesha wrote "Till the World Ends" with Britney Spears, an American popstar, and later joined the song's remix, where rapper Nicki Minaj also appeared.
