Plot summary
Todd McCray has a learning disability and a way with animals in need of care. He lives with his parents, George and Mary Ann McCray, in the rural Midwest. Over the two weeks of the Christmas holidays, the local animal shelter runs its first Adopt a Dog for Christmas program, and Todd takes up the cause. He works to convince his family, his neighbors and the rural community to take part so that as many dogs as possible find homes. One dog in particular has caught his heart. His father, George, is reluctant to give the effort his full support.

- Author Greg Kincaid wrote the story almost ten years before it was published for his wife and five children, aged 9 to 13, but the family hated the original, particularly its unhappy ending. He rewrote it over the next year with an ending they liked better and named a character after each of his children.
- During the film's original CBS broadcast on November 29, 2009, the network sponsored a nationwide "Foster a Lonely Pet" program with Petfinder.com, covering more than 2,000 shelters and animal-rescue groups across North America, and aired a post-credits public service announcement featuring author Greg Kincaid.
