Plot summary

It is 1964 in Queens, New York, and one apartment building holds a mix of households. George and Florel Bernstein, Archibald and Joyce Smith, Mary and Bob Cunningham and a neighbor named Gonzales all pass through the same hallways, each with separate worries, plans and quarrels. Around them the borough is being reshaped, and the arguments over race and rights that divide the country reach the building too. In the hours before the attack, the story follows a handful of these people. On a March night, Kitty Genovese is attacked on the street outside, and thirty-seven people nearby hear or see something. None of them intervenes or calls the police.
