Plot summary
As the Allied invasion of Europe nears, American major Jefferson Pike is sent from London to Lisbon to question a German double agent about what the Germans know. His drink is drugged, and he comes to in German hands, flown to Germany inside a coffin. Deep in a German forest, an American-born psychiatrist, Walter Gerber, has built a fake military convalescent center, staffed by people drilled to speak American English and observe American customs. Pike wakes believing he is in Allied care, aged and gray, in the year 1950, recovering from amnesia. Nurse Anna Hedler tells him they have been married two months.
