Plot summary
In 1976, five carnival workers, Charly, Venus, Panda, Levon and Roscoe, are on the road on Halloween night when scarecrow-masked figures attack them and carry them into a large building. There, three elderly figures in aristocratic dress and powdered wigs, Sister Dragon, Sister Serpent and their leader Father Napoleon-Horatio-Silas Murder, announce the game of 31: twelve hours inside a maze of rooms. Five clowns known as the Heads, among them Sick-Head, Psycho-Head, Schizo-Head, Death-Head and Sex-Head, hunt the captives, and capture means torture and death. While the carnies look for a way through, spectators set odds on their survival and place bets.

- Rob Zombie partly financed 31 through two crowdfunding campaigns on Fanbacked.com, saying the business had changed so much that a film like it could no longer get made traditionally; the second campaign, in February 2015, came at fans' request.
- The MPAA rated 31 NC-17 twice for its sadistic violence and sexuality before finally granting it an R on January 5, 2016; Rob Zombie told a fan that an uncut "Zombie Cut" would later reach DVD.
- Rob Zombie got the idea for 31 after reading a statistic that Halloween is the number one day of the year when people go missing, and he also drew on watching employees dressed as chainsaw-carrying clowns at his own Great American Nightmare frightfest.
