Esme Percy
Biography
Esmé Percy was an English actor and director whose career was closely associated with the plays of Bernard Shaw. Born in London and educated at Windsor and Brussels, he trained in Paris under Sarah Bernhardt and began his English stage career in 1904 with F. R. Benson's touring company, playing Romeo in his London debut the following year. He joined Herbert Beerbohm Tree's company in 1906, later took leading Shakespeare roles including Hamlet and Macbeth with Benson, and in 1924 became general producer of the Bernard Shaw Repertory Company. Much of the 1930s found him in West End productions, and he also worked at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park. He appeared in about forty films between 1930 and 1956 and produced eight Shaw plays for BBC Radio. He died in 1957.

Early training
Percy studied acting in Paris under Sarah Bernhardt at the Paris Conservatoire, along with Georges Berr and Maurice Leloir, before starting his English stage career.
Behind the camera
Percy became general producer to Charles Macdona's Bernard Shaw Repertory Company in 1924, directing all productions and also playing roles such as Henry Higgins and John Tanner.
