Plot summary
Under the streets of New York, homeless squatters live in abandoned subway tunnels, out of sight of the city above. Chelsea arrives with her camera to document them, brushing off warnings from two cops, Smitty and Lockeheed. Skeeter, a resident, gives her a tour and brings her to Jake, a former police officer who has been self-destructive since his wife was murdered, and to Gabriel, a onetime social worker, Harmony, an artist, and the orphaned twins Flash and Alexis. Chelsea asks to meet Angel, who leads a cult-like anarchist gang and blames the surface world for persecuting the homeless. He is preparing a revolution and orders her to take a warning back to the world above.
