Plot summary
In the early 2010s, college student Chris runs into Samantha, called Sam, and begins helping with her safety buddies program. Before his driving test he fills out a DMV form naming himself an organ donor, and he asks her out on a date if he passes. She meets his family over Easter break. Years earlier in the 1950s, Jorge, the son of the Cuban owner of a rum brand, collapsed playing soccer as a boy and had an operation on his lungs; the doctor told his parents he likely would not live to 20. Now about 30, he meets Leslie, a flight attendant, on a flight. In Hawaii she asks about the scar and the cough, and he explains his illness. He proposes, and they marry without his parents, who object to him marrying an American woman.
