Plot summary
Freddy Lupin is the heir to a werewolf pack that has long guarded its town and keeps its distance from dogs. On his fourteenth birthday he undergoes his first transformation, expecting a wolf, and turns into a poodle instead. The pack elders give him until the next moonrise to show that a wolf's heart beats in him or be cast out. In town he meets Batty, a mixed-breed stray nicknamed Houndini for slipping free of the dog catchers, who agrees to help him. Freddy wants to recover the moonstone that the ice cream man Foxwell Cripp took from him years before, and to convince the pack he still belongs.
