Stepin Fetchit
Biography
Stepin Fetchit, the stage name of Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry, was an American comedian, vaudeville performer, and film actor born in Key West, Florida. He began as a singer and tap dancer, ran away to a carnival, and became a vaudeville artist and carnival manager. He became known for comic-relief roles built on his lazy character. He signed a studio contract after In Old Kentucky and starred in Hearts in Dixie. He appeared with Will Rogers in Judge Priest (1934) and other films, and played a manservant in Charlie Chan in Egypt (1935). He worked in films less often after 1939, and almost not at all after 1953, though he later appeared in cameos in the television movie Cutter (1972) and the films Amazing Grace (1974) and Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976). He received a special NAACP Image Award in 1976 and was added to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.
