Plot summary
Josh Parsons is eight years old, and he has an imaginary friend he calls Z. His parents, Beth and Kevin, take Z for a harmless phase of childhood, the kind of thing a boy outgrows. Then Josh begins behaving in ways his school calls uncharacteristically disruptive, and the school suspends him. That suspension costs the family the company of the other parents, who keep their children away. At a playdate, Josh throws a fellow classmate, Daniel, down the stairs and injures him heavily. During a trip to an indoor amusement park, Beth watches a monster-like creature chase Josh inside a slide; she follows and finds her son seemingly unharmed.
