Plot summary
James and Hayley are a young couple who have kept their relationship from their families. Each boards a train at a London station intending to surprise the other, and they pass without noticing that they have traded destinations. Hayley arrives at the country house of James's father, Lord Humphrey, Earl of Gloucester, a somber man who believes his son is at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst rather than studying drama. James arrives in Macclesfield, where Hayley's boisterous working-class relatives take him in. The pair telephone and agree to hide the truth from both households, and Hayley introduces herself as a fellow officer cadet, until Humphrey's questions unsettle her story. Snow cancels the trains, leaving each of them stranded with the wrong family.
