Edward Woodward
Biography
Edward Woodward was an English actor and singer who built a long career on stage, television, and film. Born in Croydon in 1930, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional debut in 1946, before working in repertory and Shakespeare. He appeared in London's West End and on Broadway, in plays such as Rattle of a Simple Man and High Spirits. His television breakthrough came as the title character in Callan from 1967 to 1972, winning a 1970 BAFTA Award for Best Actor. He starred as Sergeant Neil Howie in The Wicker Man (1973), as the title figure in Breaker Morant (1980), and appeared in Who Dares Wins (1982) and Hot Fuzz (2007). From 1985 to 1989 he led The Equalizer, winning a Golden Globe, and received Emmy nominations from 1986 to 1990. He also recorded albums as a tenor and was made an OBE in 1978.

Early training
Woodward entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at 16 as its youngest ever student, after leaving school at 15 and working briefly in a sanitary engineer's office.
Big break
Woodward's role as David Callan in the ITV Armchair Theatre play A Magnum for Schneider led to the spy series Callan, an early television part for him.
A role that slipped away
Woodward was offered a cameo in the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man but declined it, having starred in the original as Sergeant Neil Howie.
Languages
For the 1993 Welsh language drama Tan ar y Comin, Woodward appeared in both the English and Welsh versions and was specially coached in Welsh, a language he did not speak.

After Laurence Olivier invited Woodward to choose his own role at the Royal National Theatre in 1970, Woodward picked Cyrano de Bergerac.
