Plot summary
Mavis Gary is thirty-seven, divorced, and drinking too much, and she writes a young adult novel series that is about to end. When an email brings a photo of the newborn daughter of Buddy Slade, her high school boyfriend, and his wife Beth Slade, Mavis reads it as a sign that the two of them belong together. She leaves Minneapolis for Mercury, Minnesota, telling people she is there to handle a real estate deal, and arranges to meet Buddy at a sports bar. At Woody's she runs into Matt Freehauf, a classmate she hardly recalls, who walks with a brace after jocks at their school beat him, believing he was gay. He tells her the plan is foolish; she ignores him.
