Plot summary
Mathias Gold, a down-and-out New Yorker, learns that his estranged father has left him a large apartment in Paris. He spends everything he has on a plane ticket, meaning to sell it. Mathilde Girard lives there, though. His father bought the property from her 43 years earlier under a viager, a French contract that let her keep living in it; Mathias owes her €2,400 each month, for as long as she lives. She lets him stay, taking his father's gold watch as payment. Her daughter Chloé also lives there.
