Plot summary
Jaime Buckley's mother sends her to stay with her aunt Beth and her uncle Jean-François in a small Quebec town after her father dies. Jean-François is a devout Jehovah's Witness who hopes to become a leader in his congregation. Jaime is persuaded to attend a congregation meeting, where Marike notices her. Marike invites her to dinner with her family, and Jaime meets Marike's older sister Amanda. Jaime describes her wish to see European cities such as London, Barcelona, Prague and Lucca, and the Guinigi Tower. Marike mentions that her mother walked away from the community and is counted as dead. At school, Jaime befriends Nate, a student who does not belong to the Witnesses.
