Plot summary
Yellowbird is a tiny orphaned hatchling who makes his home in the ruins of an old house and has never dared to leave it, though his friend Bug urges him to go out into the world. When Darius, the leader of a flock about to migrate to Africa, is wounded, word of the route passes to the first bird he meets, and that bird is Yellowbird. Karl had expected to take over the leadership. Yellowbird tells the flock he can guide them south, though he is young and has no experience of such a journey, and Delf is among the birds who back him. The flock follows him on a route he has never flown.
