Plot summary
Rose Garcia has grown up in a small Texas town without legal status. She wants to become a country music performer. Priscilla, her mother, holds a job at a motel and wants Rose to study instead, a promise made to Rose's late father. Elliot, a friend who works in a music shop, invites Rose to Austin. Priscilla refuses, having already lost the money she gave an immigration lawyer who claimed the family could gain citizenship. Rose and Elliot tell her they are going to church and drive to Austin, where Elliot gives Rose a fake ID and urges her to sing. At the Broken Spoke, a bar, she meets the country singer Dale Watson. Rose returns to find immigration officers taking Priscilla.
