Plot summary
Cherie Currie, a Los Angeles teenager, wants to be a rock star and styles her hair and make-up after David Bowie. Joan Jett, another teenager with the same ambition, tells record producer Kim Fowley at a club that she wants an all-girl rock band. He brings her together with drummer Sandy West, and the two jam. Fowley suggests finding an attractive blonde, so he and Joan visit clubs around the city. They find Cherie and ask her to audition in the San Fernando Valley.

- Distributor Apparition's sudden company shutdown forced it to slash the planned 1,400-theater release to fewer than 300, and the film left theaters with a domestic gross of only $3,573,673.
- Producers Art and John Linson specifically sought a female director because they saw the story as being about two young girls, Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, in over their heads in "a man's world."
- Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart took vocal lessons and learned their characters' instruments for the roles, and Fanning got on stage with the band Living Things as part of her research.
- Cherie Currie said afterwards that the film was the filmmakers' version of the story and that her book was the real one: "This is just a lighter kind of flash of what The Runaways were for a specific amount of time."
- The film is based on lead singer Cherie Currie's own memoir, Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway, published in 1989.
- The finished film used 34 credited songs but left 20 more off the official soundtrack release, and it had no official composer.
