Plot summary
Peggy is in her 40s, single, and works as an administrative assistant; she has little social or romantic life, and her dog Pencil matters most to her. One evening Pencil refuses to come indoors, and the next morning she finds him whimpering in the yard of her neighbor Al. A vet cannot save him, and he dies of poisoning. The people around her offer sympathy without much understanding: her friend Layla tells her Pencil stood in the way of romance, and her brother Pier and her sister-in-law Bret are wrapped up in themselves. Al invites her to dinner. Newt, who works with the SPCA and was on hand when Pencil died, telephones her about Valentine, a King Shepherd with a difficult temperament, and offers to train the animal.

- Mike White wrote his directing debut after his own pet cat died and he was taken aback by how hard it hit him. He built the lead part around Molly Shannon, having worked with her on his 2004 sitcom Cracking Up.
