Plot summary
Barnes Hawthorne, smoking marijuana with his friend P.J. one winter day, notices Remi Aguilar across the street. The two meet again on a train to New York, where Remi is headed to tour Columbia University. Over the ride they compare what comes after high school: Remi has Harvard and law in view, like her parents, and Barnes has only an aimless gap year. She suggests he volunteer with sea turtles or work for a music group, and he shares a Talking Heads playlist with her. At their stop Barnes asks her on a date, but a cyclist hits her and she needs stitches. At the hospital she declines, saying she is not ready to let him into her life just then, and they part.

- In January 2023, Percy Hynes White, who plays Barnes Hawthorne opposite Jenna Ortega, was accused of sexual misconduct, which he denied. Director Tiffany Paulsen defended his involvement in the film and did not want to recast his role.
- The shoot was paused for three weeks so the film's lead cast could attend promotional events for their then-upcoming series Wednesday, which later became one of the most-watched series on Netflix.
