Plot summary
It is the famine winter of 1944-45 in the occupied Netherlands, and fourteen-year-old Michiel van Beusekom lives in an eastern village where his father, Johan, serves as mayor and tries to keep the peace with the German soldiers. Michiel resents that caution and longs to join the Dutch resistance. His uncle Ben arrives to stay, and Theo's older brother Dirk, a resistance member, comes to trust Michiel. When a British plane crashes in the woods, the pilot, Jack, parachutes out with an injured leg. Michiel finds him in a hunter's shelter, brings him food, and asks his sister Erica, a nurse, to treat the wound. Jack needs to reach Zwolle across the IJssel, and Michiel takes on the job of getting him there.
