Plot summary

In 1920s Germany, twin sisters Lotte and Anna lose their parents when they are six. Quarreling distant relatives divide the girls, and each goes to a different country. Lotte is taken in by her Dutch aunt and grows up in a Jewish family in the Netherlands. Anna works as a farm hand on her German uncle's farm, a poor Catholic household where she is abused. The two try to stay in contact, but Anna's family has no address for Lotte, and Lotte's family never mails the letters she writes.
