Plot summary
A Dutch merchant vessel sails north in 1596, its crew set on a northeast passage to the Indies under Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerck. The novice writer Gerrit de Veer is aboard, and the route was championed by the cartographer and reverend Petrus Plancius, whose daughter Catharina is in a relationship with Gerrit. Gerrit chronicles the voyage. Sea ice closes around the ship and strands the men on the island of Novaya Zemlya, where they spend the winter in Het Behouden Huys, the Safe Home, facing polar bears, hunger and the arctic cold. Their chances of lasting until the following spring are almost none.

It is loosely based on Gerrit de Veer's diary of his safe return, published in 1598.
