Plot summary
The family's circumstances have become difficult, and one day the father leaves Jacob and Marie in the woods while they are gathering firewood. The two teenagers are on their own. In Jacob's jacket their mother has left a note directing them to an aunt and uncle in Spain, but when they get there both relatives have died in an accident. Jacob, hungry, goes out to buy a roll and comes back to a note from Marie saying she has gone to marry a rich man called Diego. Jacob follows her to the house, where Diego, a surgeon, lives with his sister Teresa.
