Lambert and Tuur are twelve years old and live in a Dutch village under German occupation. Lambert's father cooperates with the Germans and is installed as mayor, and Lambert's older brother has joined the Hitlerjugend; his father offers Lambert a model train set and a new locomotive if he joins too. Tuur, for his part, learns one night that his parents and older brother belong to the local resistance, and he keeps that knowledge to himself. Maartje, a girl from the city, moves in with her uncle's family and pushes her way into the boys' friendship. Tuur warms to her, and she trusts him alone with a secret she swears him to keep.
