Plot summary
In 1944 the Allies advance from Belgium into Zeeland, which the German army occupies. Teuntje Visser works in the office of a collaborationist mayor. Her father is a doctor and her younger brother Dirk has joined the Dutch Resistance. Marinus van Staveren is a Dutch volunteer who is transferred from the Eastern Front to Zeeland to work as secretary and translator for Oberst Berghof, the German commandant. Sergeant Will Sinclair, a glider pilot, comes down in a flooded estuary in Zeeland during Operation Market Garden.
