Plot summary
Jeanette and Jerry Brinson have settled in Great Falls, Montana, in 1960 with their teenage son Joe. Jerry loses his position as golf pro at the country club and, out of pride, turns down the chance to have it back. Rather than hunt for other work, he spends his days watching crews battle a forest fire in the mountains nearby. Jeanette becomes a swimming instructor to help cover expenses, and Joe leaves the football team for a part-time job at a photography studio. Jerry then signs on to fight the same fire for low pay, a decision Jeanette opposes and Joe dreads.
