Plot summary
After NCAA violations wipe out years of victories, Texas State University's Fighting Armadillos lose their coaches and all but one player. New head coach Ed Gennero has no scholarships to offer, so he and assistant Wally Rig Riggendorf hold open tryouts and assemble a squad from the student body: a military fanatic, a physics instructor, a martial arts champion, and Andre Krimm, a graduate teaching assistant recruited for the defensive line. Rig brings back Paul Blake, a 34-year-old farmer who was a high school quarterback sixteen years earlier but never attended college. Blake enrolls, stands out in classrooms because of his age, and draws the attention of journalism professor Suzanne Carter. Dean Phillip Elias wants the football program scrapped entirely, and he blocks prospects on academic grounds. Lucy Draper, a women's soccer player, joins as the kicker.
