Plot summary
Flannery O'Connor is a Southern writer and a devout Catholic. After winning a writing contest, she goes to New York to seek a publisher's approval for her novel Wise Blood, and she refuses the demand that she outline it. Robert Lowell, who calls her his most talented student, discusses the book with her, and the two share romantic feelings. Her imagination keeps producing episodes from her own short stories, among them Good Country People and The Life You Save May Be Your Own. Back in Georgia she is tired and her face breaks out in rashes; the diagnosis is lupus, the disease that killed her father. Her mother Regina tries to help, though she finds the writing abrasive.
