Plot summary
Rudolf Hess sits in Spandau Prison in West Berlin, the last Nazi leader still held, and the secrets he carries could end the careers of prominent political figures. An international news network will pay to have him freed. Robert McCann and Michael Lukas approach Alex Faulkner, who refuses and recommends John Haddad, a former Lebanese-American soldier working as a mercenary. Haddad studies the prison by joining a construction crew there and draws up plans of the complex. Karl Stroebling, a Nazi who works for the Soviet Union, has him abducted and tortured for details of the mission. Haddad escapes and goes to Bavaria with Kathy Lukas to plan the rescue away from Stroebling's interference.

- Richard Burton intended to retire for at least six months after making Wild Geese II, but died of an intracerebral hemorrhage at his home in Geneva a week before filming was to begin. Producer Euan Lloyd, who had just visited him, said he had passed his physical examination for the film.
- Laurence Olivier, then 77, played Rudolf Hess while in poor health during filming, requiring a nurse to accompany him, and was beginning to suffer memory problems. Edward Fox recalled him laboring for hours on his one long speech.
- Roger Moore was asked to reprise his role of Shawn Fynn from the first Wild Geese film but did not like the sequel's script.
- Lewis Collins claimed he was originally signed to play John Haddad because of a contract with producer Euan Lloyd, but the role went to the American Scott Glenn.
- Patrick Stewart took his small role as a Russian general only to pay for much-needed home repairs, and felt his appearance in the film was the biggest embarrassment of his career.
