Biography

Patsy Ruth Miller was an American film actress who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. Alla Nazimova spotted her at a Hollywood party and gave her a first small role in Camille (1921), which starred Rudolph Valentino. Her parts improved, and in 1922 she was picked as a WAMPAS Baby Star. She was acclaimed in 1923 for playing Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923) opposite Lon Chaney. During the later 1920s she appeared chiefly in light romantic comedies, opposite actors including Clive Brook and Edward Everett Horton. Miller retired from films in 1931, made a cameo in Quebec in 1951, and returned to the screen for Mother in 1978. She later gained recognition as a writer, winning three O. Henry Awards for short stories, and also wrote a novel, radio scripts and plays.
