Sal Mineo
Biography
Sal Mineo was an American actor whose career began on the stage as a child, with appearances in The Rose Tattoo and The King and I before he made his screen debut in Six Bridges to Cross (1955). His breakthrough came in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), playing John Plato Crawford, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor at 17. He followed it with Crime in the Streets and Giant (both 1956), then Exodus (1960), winning a Golden Globe and a second Oscar nomination. Typecast as a troubled teen, he sought different parts in films such as The Longest Day (1962), Cheyenne Autumn (1964), and The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). He also recorded pop singles, one reaching No. 9, and later directed stage productions, while his final film role was in Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971). He died in 1976.

In 1957, Mineo briefly tried pop music, recording several songs and an album. His single "Start Movin' (In My Direction)" hit No. 9 on Billboard's pop chart, and it earned a gold disc after selling more than a million copies.
