Plot summary
Two years after his wife Janey died in a car accident, twenty-seven-year-old Max Baron keeps to himself in St. Louis, where he works in advertising. Driving to a bachelor party for his friend Neil, he stops at a diner called White Palace to collect burgers, and when the order comes up short he drives back to take it up with Nora Baker, a forty-three-year-old waitress who refunds his money. Max leaves the party and runs into Nora at a bar. After each of them speaks about a loss, he drives her home to Dogtown and wrecks his car on her mailbox. She offers him the couch. He returns saying he will fix the mailbox, and a relationship begins. Max keeps Nora from his friends and family, and the differences in their ages and backgrounds remain between them.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about White Palace (1990)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was originally to be called The White Castle, and the novel even refers to a real White Castle at S. Grand Blvd. and Gravois Ave. in south St. Louis, but the restaurant chain refused permission to use its trademarked name in either the novel or the film, and refused to let its restaurants be filming locations.
- Gina Gershon was cast as Stephanie Deluc and shot many scenes, but for reasons unknown the studio removed all the scenes, so her entire role ended up on the cutting room floor. That also meant Kathy Bates's role of Rosemary, Max's boss, was greatly reduced to a couple of brief scenes.
- After the film was released the diner's owners sought permission to permanently rename it "White Palace", but were refused by the studio, so the diner was instead renamed "White Knight".
