Plot summary

Heaven is a town of clean row homes and leafy streets, ringed by a giant wall and watched around the clock by soldiers in monstrous gas masks. Caine rules it, his image on every block, and he asks only one thing: that no one speak with the Evil One who lives on the other side. A boy named Marius grows fixated on the black birds that flock through the town. Chasing one, he finds a talking cat whose leg is broken. The cat pleads with him and with Eden, his classmate, to slip through a gap in the wall and help her. The children do it, and the cat leads them to a bright fruit growing wild out there and then to the Evil One, who begins teaching them what Caine keeps hidden.
