Plot summary
Figures build a tower that reaches toward stormy red skies, and it is struck down. A tall figure in a jacket and gas mask, the Assassin, descends by diving bell into a ruined underworld with a map and a briefcase. On his way he watches larger monsters and elaborate machines of torture prey on lesser creatures. He comes to a city of faceless drones made from excrement, who carry out laborious physical tasks and often die doing them. When the drones hear a baby's cries and babbles, they abandon their work and wander toward the source: a tower holding screens that display close-ups of eyes and a bloody mouth. The Assassin walks with them and stares at a lone drone.

- The film was completed in 2021 after being produced over a period of 30 years, with the work stretching across three decades.
- Phil Tippett began filming Mad God while working on RoboCop 2, then shelved it after his work on Jurassic Park led him to believe the days of stop-motion were over.
- Twenty years after shelving the film, Tippett began working on it again with encouragement from members of his studio, using crews of volunteers to assist him.
- A two-minute virtual-reality short version was released in 2016; its characters were animated and shot separately in front of a green screen with Dragon software, then composited together with Nuke.
