Plot summary
A mechanical wasp dies in the gears of a factory where artificial insemination is done, and its remains drop into one of the jars there. In a grim slum town, a woman gives birth to a thumb-sized child, and she and her husband, Pa and Ma Thumb, name him Tom. A man in a black suit watches the house. A laboratory takes Tom away to be studied and experimented on, and he escapes with help from another captive. He comes to a town where everyone is his own size, and there Jack, a young warrior, hates the big people he calls giants. Tom asks Jack to help him find his father.

- The film began as a 10-minute short commissioned for BBC2's Christmas programming, but the BBC rejected it for being too dark for the festive season; the feature-length version was commissioned a year later.
