Plot summary
Tommy Graham lives on a Texas farm with his father Josiah, an abusive alcoholic. Tommy's twin siblings, Eli and Mary, left long ago. Oil company representatives want to buy the land, and the assemblyman they contact says the Graham property has a history: Josiah's wife Miriam hanged herself in the garden decades earlier. Eli, a convicted sex offender in debt from gambling and drugs, is told by Boone, a bartender and criminal, that he can clear his record by helping steal gold from a band of Romani at their party. Mary and her husband Ross sit before an adoption agency, which asks about her tubal ligation and offers a psychiatric evaluation. Eli visits Mary to discuss the oil company's offer, and she decides to return to the farm.
