Plot summary
In 1973, Wendy Darling shares a house in the rural South with her mother, Angela, who waits tables, and her twin brothers, James and Douglas. Their cousin Thomas Marshall, a neighbor, storms out of his birthday party and is last seen climbing onto a passing train car, coaxed by a hooded, childlike stranger. Wendy, a toddler then, watches it happen. Years pass, and one night a train crosses the window again. A boy rides on top of the cars, and Wendy and her brothers slip outside to join him. The boy, Peter, carries them to a tropical island whose volcano he calls Mother, where other children live and where Peter says Mother's spirit keeps them from growing older for as long as they believe in her.
