Anne Gwynne
Biography
Anne Gwynne was an American actress whose many horror roles made her one of the earliest scream queens. Born in Waco, Texas, she studied drama at Stephens College before a modeling job for Catalina Swimwear led to work in small theaters, a newsreel, and a charity short. In 1939 she signed with Universal and was immediately cast in Unexpected Father. At the studio she appeared in film noir, musical comedy, and Westerns, including Ride 'Em Cowboy (1942) with Abbott and Costello. She also acted with Buster Crabbe in the 12-episode serial Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940). Black Friday (1940) marked her first horror role, as Boris Karloff's daughter, and House of Frankenstein (1944) was her final horror picture at Universal. Later she became a television pioneer, as Pat Kelly, the district attorney's secretary, on Public Prosecutor, TV's first filmed series, from 1947 to 1948.
