- In 1971 Nicholas Ray was invited to lecture at Binghamton University's Harpur College and was offered a two-year teaching post in its new film department; he and his students then moved into an off-campus house, formed a filmmaking commune and made the film together, sharing all duties.
- We Can't Go Home Again was the major project of the last decade of Nicholas Ray's life; he and his collaborators continuously re-edited it, and he was still making alterations to it when he died in 1979.
- The film was shot on a mix of Super 8, 16mm and 35mm and used a video synthesizer that the artist Nam June Paik had donated to the project.
