Plot summary
Kit Tilden is a widow who works as a dance-hall hostess. Her young son is killed during a bank robbery, and she wants him buried beside his father in Siringo, a town that now stands empty inside Apache territory. Yellowleg, a former sergeant in the Union army, killed the boy by accident. He determines to take the body to Siringo himself, no matter what Kit thinks. He makes two men come with them: Turk, who deserted from the Confederate army, and Billy, a shootist.
