Plot summary
Alfred and Sigbjørn are dock workers in Bergen. In 1939 Alfred, newly married with three children, needs a job badly, so he takes a berth on a merchant ship sailing for New York, though leaving his family is hard. Sigbjørn signs on too. When World War II begins, the Allies commandeer the Norwegian merchant fleet, and the two men are kept at sea for the duration, unable to send word home. Their convoys are attacked by German submarines, and the crews have no weapons with which to answer. In occupied Bergen, Alfred's wife Cecilia and their children live through wartime hardship, and the city comes under Allied bombing too.
