Plot summary
Hungary is a German ally in 1944, but as the war nears its end Berlin doubts the loyalty of Regent Horthy, who is trying to steer his country between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. In Budapest, two young men at a Jewish radio repair shop, Elek Cohen and Ferenc Jacobson, are sent home as the occupation begins. A Catholic priest supplies them with baptismal papers under false names, and they urge their families to flee, but the two are taken into the Hungarian labor service. Regent Horthy's armistice talks reach the Nazis, who abduct his son. Elek and Ferenc escape the labor service and come back to empty homes, where Elek finds the baptismal certificates taped behind a family photograph. Carl Lutz runs the Swiss mission at the Glass House, where passes let Jews leave the country.
