Plot summary
In May 1864 the First Michigan Cavalry is stuck in the Wilderness, a Virginia forest, its men struggling to survive. Among them are Sergeant Longacre, worn down by the campaign, Covington, an illustrator whose task is to record the war in exact detail, and Jim Rabb, a young trooper who has lost a brother and still rides his mare Jen. One morning Jim finds that Jen has given birth. A newborn colt stands beside her, unsteady and afraid. Longacre tells Jim to shoot the animal before it becomes a burden to the unit. Jim refuses, keeping the young horse as a comfort and a sign that beauty survives in wartime, and the foal stays with the marching men.
