Plot summary
In 14th-century France, Jean de Carrouges and Jacques le Gris are squires who swear allegiance to Count Pierre d'Alençon, the overlord King Charles VI gives Jean. Marguerite de Thibouville marries Jean after her father Robert pledges a dowry along with rights to valuable estates. Pierre claims Aunou-le-Faucon, a prized estate, to cover Robert's unpaid taxes, then hands it to Jacques, whom he favors. Jean petitions the king over the estate and is turned away. The marriage of Jean and Marguerite strains because the couple do not conceive. Marguerite accuses Jacques of rape, and Jean brings the case to King Charles VI, who orders that a duel settle it.
