Plot summary
In 1849 Maryland, a slave state, Araminta Ross, called Minty, is enslaved on the Brodess plantation, where her mother and sister live. She is married to John Tubman, a freedman. A lawyer's letter states that her mother was to be freed at 45 and her children born free; Edward Brodess tears it up. Brodess dies soon after, and his son Gideon offers Minty for sale. A beating years earlier left her with spells, and she decides to escape, leaving John behind because being caught helping her would cost him his freedom.
